Is Your Holiday List Prepared For Black Friday?

Now that November is here, if you're a savvy consumer, it's time to start planning your holiday shopping strategy. With Black Friday and Cyber Monday just around the corner, there is no better time to get some more substantial items crossed off your list.

From home security and improvement to automotive, there are more than enough great deals to be found in-store and online at most major retailers across Canada. However, with work schedules and the sheer magnitude of available products, it's hard for some to know where to begin.

Here are a few ideas to point you in the right direction.

Home Security

While home security used to be somewhat out of reach for some, often requiring expensive installs and monthly plans, the rise of smart-home automation has made traditional security setups the way of the past. For less than $10 a month—if you need more cloud storage—you can now get doorbells and outdoor cameras around your property that require little to no installation skill. Best part? You can access them anywhere on earth with a smartphone.

Their greatest strength, for those more security-conscious and hands-on, is their ability to patch into your current home setup, whether Google or Alexa, which includes everything from the remote thermostat to light controls.

However, depending on whether you use Nest, Blink or Ring (or any others), you'll likely require some upfront investment to get a hub or supporting tech to make everything play nicely. With lots of sales, Black Friday and Boxing Day are the best times to plan and build the perfect home security solution.

Home Improvements

If you've been putting off giving your house some TLC, this is the perfect season to invest in a gift for yourself and plan out a fall/winter project.

While you probably won't find a local contractor offering eccentric holiday deals, Black Friday is the perfect time to get your hand on everything you need to supplement larger gut jobs or more minor upgrades.

That can mean many things; perhaps you're currently in the middle of a kitchen remodel or working with a contractor to plan a dream kitchen. It's an excellent opportunity to buy cabinets, paint, flooring, or brand-new fixtures for reduced prices, which could lower your total reno cost. If you're looking at breathing life into a new bathroom, you could find yourself a new vanity, sink and toilet—plus some extras, like towel bars or shelving—at some of the year's lowest ticket prices.

New Vehicle

If you've been in the market for a new or used vehicle, Black Friday deals could be the perfect time to pull the trigger; buyers can look forward to promotions like 0% financing, 90 days no payment and sticker price drops of as much as $10,000. However, with limited stocks and short windows to make decisions to take advantage of dealer-specific promos, buyers should prepare beforehand.

Low-hanging fruit would be to research, test drive and take note of the local availability of vehicles you're interested in, making it easy to walk in and haggle (if that's your thing). It's also wise to line up your financing before you head to the dealer, that way, you can be sure you won't experience any last-minute setbacks or disappointments.
